Growing up in Palm Beach County I witnessed South Florida’s interesting relationship between man and nature. Fishing and other aquatic activities is very prevalent and has instilled a certain beach culture that one who has lived there would not notice was something special until leaving the area. The beach, the humidity, the stucco housing, the overdeveloping and, of course the snowbirds were things that we could count on while growing up in this flat suburb. These elemets of my childhood have reappeared in my current work.
The paintings have a mixture of portraiture and landscape with a sense of the strength of gravity on living things. I would like to portray the fleeting existence of man, man’s creations, and the animals we share the environment with, and the strength and importance of the Earth itself. The tropical atmosphere inspires the color choice and sometimes the subject matter. The Graphic Design series is more socially inspired, with the gentrification that is going on in Palm Beach County, and how extreme the range of living conditions are. I am expanding on this idea and am sure that it will be a life-long obsession, to capture how odd a place West Palm Beach is and I hope to have this project grow in the future.
I am interested in photography, but mostly to aid the perspective I use in painting and design. All aspects of art and design hold my attention very well, and I feel that a wider range of knowledge in each faucet of fine art will serve to develop well-defined design sense that is my own. My newest affair is with silkscreen printing, and I hope to grown in skill and understanding of this new design process. At the brink of graduating I feel like I am finally gaining my own distinct style and a true character in my work that I am happy with. I am eager to keep learning and to apply new artistic processes to further express what I wish to convey about myself and my surroundings.
